The Lagos State Government has affirmed its dedication to providing compensation to both landlords and tenants affected by the construction of the second phase of the Blue Rail Line in the Okokomaiko area of the state.
During a press briefing marking the 20th anniversary of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, the Managing Director, Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, reiterated the government’s commitment. She assured that, in line with Lagos State’s established history of adhering to due process in such circumstances, the residents displaced by the project would receive compensation.
She said, “When it comes to the displacement of people, I think we have demonstrated that we follow due process, and we pay due compensation.
“So, for us, we follow international best practices, and we ensure that everybody that is displaced is compensated.
“We are the first organisation that compensated tenants. What we’ve found out is that the tenants will not be compensated, and the landlord will take the money and go. But because we have identified that that is a problem, we compensate tenants as well, so that nobody in the state is left behind.”
“All we’re trying to say is that we will do our best to see that all who have to be displaced will be duly compensated,” she added.
