The Lagos State Taskforce apprehended 88 individuals suspected of being miscreants and criminals during two separate operations in the Oshodi-Bolade area and its surroundings.
The agency stated that the arrests were part of an ongoing initiative to rid Lagos of street urchins, touts, and other criminal elements disrupting the peace of the community.
The operations, carried out between 3 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Tuesday, came after the Taskforce received numerous complaints from concerned motorists, residents, and passersby about a surge in criminal activities in the area.
These complaints were lodged through the agency’s feedback channels, prompting swift action from law enforcement.
The Director of Press and Public Affairs for the Lagos State Taskforce, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, confirmed the details in a statement, noting that all those arrested will face prosecution.
He said, “The operation, which was carried out around 3 am and 4 pm respectively today took place at Oshodi, Bolade and its environs, was executed following series of complaints lodged by concerned motorists, residents and passersby through the Agency’s feedback channels.”
According to the Taskforce, criminals in the area had increasingly taken to harassing unsuspecting pedestrians and motorists, particularly during rush hour, creating a heightened sense of fear and insecurity.
“Complaints reported an alarming rise in criminal activities, particularly during rush hour, where hoodlums would lie in wait around the area to harass unsuspecting passersby and motorists,” the statement added.
Taskforce Chairman CSP Adetayo Akerele emphasized the government’s dedication to ensuring the safety of Lagosians, declaring that these operations mark a firm step toward restoring security.
He noted that the government will not allow these criminals to terrorize residents.
“We cannot allow these criminal elements to hold our people hostage in their own communities. The State Government remains steadfast in its resolve to protect lives and property,” Akerele said, reinforcing the seriousness of the government’s commitment. “This operation is a testament to our unwavering dedication to put an end to this ugly trend,” he added.
The operation was reportedly met with enthusiastic support from citizens who witnessed it, particularly those at the Oshodi Oke Bridge, where local passersby and residents applauded the agency’s efforts.
The Taskforce assured that the operations would continue, aligning with the objectives of the THEMES PLUS Agenda set forth by the state government to restore order across Lagos.
Akerele further revealed that prior surveillance of the area uncovered that many of the miscreants had been using the pedestrian bridges at Oshodi Bus Stop to monitor potential victims before launching their attacks.
He expressed optimism that such activities would soon be completely eradicated.
“All the menace will soon become a thing of the past as the activities will be completely grounded soonest,” he asserted.
In addition, Akerele encouraged residents and motorists to remain alert and to report any suspicious behaviour.
“Motorists and residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the Agency or the nearest police station,” he said.
The Lagos State Taskforce reiterated its commitment to maintaining surveillance and conducting operations to safeguard lives and property in Oshodi and beyond, ensuring that citizens can move freely and safely.
“We remain on high alert and will continue to carry out surveillance and sting operations aimed at safeguarding the lives and property of motorists and residents along this axis and beyond,” Akerele concluded.
