The Lagos State House of Assembly has unveiled new principal officers, as announced by its Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, during her first session as presiding officer.
Meranda, who pledged to foster collaboration with other government arms to achieve the vision of a “Greater Lagos,” highlighted her commitment to transparency and good governance.
In the new appointments, Temitope Adedeji of Ifako/Ijaye Constituency 1 was named Majority Leader, while Richard Kasunmu, representing Ikeja Constituency 2, was appointed Deputy Majority Leader. David Setonji was assigned the role of Chief Whip, with Ganiyu Sanni from Kosofe Constituency 1 as Deputy Chief Whip.
The Speaker also announced the formation of the Selection Committee, which she will chair.
The committee’s members include Deputy Speaker Fatai Mojeed (Ibeju Lekki Constituency 1), Majority Leader Temitope Adedeji, Chief Whip David Setonji, and Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa Constituency 2). Acting Clerk Taiwo Ottun will serve as Secretary of the Committee.
Expressing gratitude for the trust placed in her leadership of the 10th Assembly, Meranda emphasized the shared responsibility of lawmakers to serve Lagos residents effectively. She stated:
“I am truly grateful for the confidence you have placed in me, and I pledge to work tirelessly to uphold the virtues of transparency and good governance that this House stands for.
“Today, we are reminded of the shared responsibilities that rest on our shoulders as representatives of the good people of Lagos State. We are elected to voice their concerns, aspirations, and needs. We are the guardians of this collective trust, and we must work to justify the faith they have placed in us.”
Meranda further stressed the importance of synergy among the legislative and executive arms of government, highlighting Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration as a key partner in achieving the state’s development goals.
She reiterated her resolve to focus on unity and progress, “We will not dwell on past controversies or disagreements. Instead, we will focus on the great and pressing task ahead, which is delivering better services to the people of Lagos.
“We will strive to create a more inclusive and appropriate democracy where every citizen feels valued, respected, and empowered.”
In addition, the Speaker committed to promoting legislative independence, prioritizing transparency, and fostering inclusivity.
She assured Lagosians that their welfare remains the Assembly’s central concern, “As Speaker, I commit to prioritising the needs of our constituents. Through you, we will ensure that united voices are heard, concerns are addressed, and our welfare is protected.”
During the session, Chief Whip David Setonji extended condolences to the people of Badagry on the passing of Pa Sunny Ajose, a member of the Governor’s Advisory Committee and a respected leader in the All Progressives Congress.
Several lawmakers, including Abiodun Tobun (Epe Constituency 1) and Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa Constituency 2), joined in paying tribute to the late politician, commending his contributions to uniting the people of Badagry and his party.
Describing Ajose as an exemplary figure, Speaker Meranda directed the Acting Clerk to send a condolence letter to his family and the people of Badagry.
The Assembly subsequently adjourned its session to January 21, 2025, at noon.
