The Lagos State Safety Commission announced the closure of Monaplax Company Limited in Ojota due to safety violations at the factory, which led to the severe injury of an employee, Matthew Eworo, whose hands were caught in a mixer machine.
The incident occurred during Eworo’s night shift at the factory on August 31.
The Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mrs. Adewunmi Okoh, confirmed the incident via a text message to The PUNCH.
She mentioned that the company’s closure was a result of an undisclosed accident at the factory that had gone unreported.
“The particular incident that caused the seal action was due to an unreported accident involving a recently employed 29-year-old, identified as Mathew Eworo, whose arms got mangled in a mixer while on night duty,” Okoh said.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that there was zero employee training, very poor housekeeping, no health and safety policy or safety management system, unavailability of personal protective equipment for workers, and poor welfare for staff.
“Furthermore, there was poor emergency response following the accident,” Okoh stated, adding that “further investigation is still ongoing.”
