The Lagos State Police Command has warned rumourmonger to desist from spreading fake news on social media that is capable of undermining the peace of the state.
The command vowed to deal decisively with those spreading fake news and “provocative content” on social media with the intent to create fear in the mind of the people.
The command Spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, made this warning on Monday while reacting to the spate of disinformation and inciting ethnic statements among social media users ahead of the March 11 governorship and state House of Assembly elections.
He, however, disclosed that the state command is investigating related cases and anyone found guilty would be apprehended and prosecuted accordingly.
“The command has begun investigating this scaremongering with a view to apprehending and prosecuting those found culpable.
“The good people and residents of the state are urged to disregard all forms of messages, especially on social media depicting fictitious, fallacious, and preposterous claims aimed at jeopardizing the peace currently being enjoyed in the state,” Hundeyin said.
