About 31 policemen attached to the Lagos State Police Command were fired from their positions between April 2021 and October 2022, due to a variety of offences.
The PUNCH reported that the offences included, among others, extrajudicial executions, extortion, and violence.
A correspondent of The PUNCH also reported that lower-ranking police officers made up the majority of those who were fired.
Seven police officers were dismissed on the 4th of October following alleged egregious misbehaviour, according to the Police Service Commission’s announcement during its 15th plenary.
Meanwhile, Benjamin Hundeyin, the public relations officer for the Lagos State Police, announced on October 13 that the request to fire Curtis Jack had been granted. Jack was charged with robbing a man and his brother in Lagos of $5,000 and N1.3 million.
In a widely shared video, another Inspector Richard Gele was shown defending and excusing the extortion of members of the public. He was invited to the Force Headquarters in Abuja three days after the viral video went viral, and on July 29 he was de-kited.
On August 8, a police constable named Liyomo Okoi was invited to the Force Headquarters where he was likewise de-kited. Okoi was shown in a popular video from July 31, 2022, thrashing a man with a machete.
Usman Baba, the inspector general of police, gave his approval for the firing of nine officers on April 26, 2022, for their claimed involvement in the institution’s rank-and-file employees’ failed walkout.
Two inspectors, five sergeants, and two constables were impacted.
Tahir Ali and Saidu Nadabo, two inspectors who were both assigned to the 53 Force Mobile Unit in Borno, were fired by the Nigeria Police on March 10, 2022.
While Nadabo was fired for trafficking 4.5kg of Cannabis Sativa, Ali was fired for allegedly killing Army Warrant Officer Donatus Vokong, who was a part of “Operation Hadin Kai.”
Inspector Jonathan Kampani was fired by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly murdering Jelili Bakare on March 18, 2021, at the Quinox Lounge in the Sangotedo District of Lagos State.
Another police officer, Sgt. Eze Aiwansoba, was fired on April 25, 2021, for attempting to murder Joy Ndubueze on April 12, 2021.
On August 13, 2021, Osun Command police officer Adamu Garba was fired as well for killing Saheed Olabomi in Osogbo.
On September 18, 2021, the Delta State Police Command fired two officers, Felix Ebikabowei and Ndubuisi Abazie, for attacking Brodrick Omesan, a tricycle rider.
On November 26, 2021, Inspector Edem Ebong was fired for allegedly killing five people and injuring four others in Enugu, according to Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 13 Muri Musa.
Three officers were discharged by the Ogun State Police Command on April 28, 2021, for allegedly extorting N153,000 from Sheriff Adedigba, a student at the Lagos State University.
The sacked officers were Sergeants Jimoh Asimiya, Sergeant Solomon Adedapo, and Inspector Sunday John.
