The Lagos State Government has refuted any involvement in the rumored ‘Oro’ traditional festival, slated for August 1 to 15, which coincides with the planned nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest.
Speaking on the incident on Thursday, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, emphasized that the festival is a customary practice in the state, similar to other religious activities held nationwide without the need for government approval.
Akosile stated, “No one questions the government when other religions hold their activities. This has never been an issue before now why are people reading meanings and getting government involved. Same respect should be maintained for traditional worshippers. It’s their constructional rights to do so in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. For instance, Oro festival is just like any other religious festival. Eid-el-Kabir for Muslims and Easter or Christmas for Christians and have no business with Lagos state government’s involvement or approval.”
He further assured the public of the government’s commitment to ensuring safety and security, saying, “Government is independent of religious festival so far it’s done in an atmosphere of peace and harmony. However, we can assure the populace of protection of lives and property. It’s the duty of government to ensure safety and we shall do.”
Akosile concluded by urging all parties to respect the rules of engagement to maintain peace and order, stating, “Protesters have their rights just like the traditional worshippers who want to perform their activities too. It’s no business of the state government for emphasis. We therefore, urge everyone to adhere strictly to the rules of engagement on the set days for peace and tranquility to continue to reign.”
