The wife of the Lagos state governor, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has stirred speculation by implying a “spiritual attack” on the health sector.
This is following the tragic death of a medical doctor, Dr. Vwaere Diaso, who lost her life in a harrowing elevator accident at General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island,
In her words; “An arrow has been fired into the health family. First of August is a day I will never forget. The same day a helicopter crashed, the same day a lift dropped down. How? How? How?”
The heart-wrenching incident, compounded by the recent helicopter crash on the same day, has prompted a fervent investigation by the governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu into the mechanical failure that led to the unfortunate event.
In a statement released on social media, Sanwo-Olu, condoled the bereaved family and colleagues.
The statement read in part, “I was deeply saddened to hear about the tragic loss of Dr. Vwaere Diaso, a dedicated medical professional whose life was taken due to a mechanical failure within the elevator at the Doctors quarters of the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island. It is distressing to think that such a promising young doctor had her life cut short in such a devastating manner.
“As a parent myself, I cannot help but feel the pain and sorrow that Dr. Diaso’s loved ones must be experiencing during this difficult time. My heart goes out to her parents, family members, friends, and colleagues who are grieving this profound loss.
“To the Nigeria Medical Association, the Medical Guild, and all the doctors in Lagos State, I extend my deepest sympathies. Losing a fellow healthcare professional is a tremendous loss for the entire medical community.”
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Medical Association, Lagos chapter, has declared a five-day statewide mourning period while simultaneously initiating an indefinite strike action.
Expressing their deep grief and anguish, the NMA demanded a comprehensive, unbiased inquiry into the incident, calling for justice to be served for the untimely loss of a promising healthcare professional.
The State Chairman of NMA, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, shared, “This is heartbreaking, heart-wrenching, and quite unfortunate. We are well aware that this same elevator has been a source of problem for many years during which several complaints have been made to all relevant agencies with no respite.
“It is very painful that at a time when the country is battling with unprecedented brain drain, a young colleague that would have been expected to attend to 6000 Nigerians was allowed to die a needless death.”
