The Lagos State Government has taken action against illegal encampments by demolishing 138 shanties located along the canal bank in Ajao Estate.
Tenants occupying these structures were reportedly paying annual rents ranging from ₦60,000 to ₦100,000.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement shared on Friday via his social media account.
Wahab explained that the demolition was part of ongoing efforts to address environmental violations and reclaim public spaces in the state.
He said, “In continuation of our efforts to reduce environmental infractions and illegal settlements, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps, also known as KAI, on Thursday removed 138 shanties in Ajao Estate Canal, where illegal occupants pay annual rents between ₦60,000 and ₦100,000.”
The Commissioner also recalled a similar discovery earlier this year of a makeshift apartment beneath the Dolphin Estate Bridge in Ikoyi, where tenants paid as much as ₦250,000 annually for partitioned rooms measuring 10×10 and 12×10 feet.
Wahab reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining environmental standards and eliminating structures that pose risks to public health and safety.
