Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, has officially transferred the Kampe Games Reserve in Patigi Local Government Area to the Federal Government, solidifying its status as a National Park.
According to The PUNCH,Abdulrazaq described the move as a milestone in environmental conservation and sustainable resource management.
“Today marks a crucial moment in our collective efforts. The inauguration of this committee fulfills the Federal Government’s roadmap for transforming Kampe Games Reserve into a National Park,” the governor stated at the event in Ilorin.
The newly formed committee includes government officials, traditional rulers, and senior stakeholders who will guide the transition process.
The governor expressed confidence in their ability to ensure a seamless handover and maximize the park’s potential for conservation and tourism.
“Our commitment to this initiative stems from our desire to position Kwara State on the global map for biodiversity conservation, environmental sustainability, and effective resource management,” he said.
The reserve, named after the Kampe River, is regarded as one of Kwara’s natural treasures. Abdulrazaq emphasized the importance of preserving it for future generations, urging committee members to actively participate in its conservation.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, the Conservator General of the National Park Service, Ibrahim Goni, highlighted that former President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the upgrade of 10 forest and game reserves, including Kampe, to National Park status. This development increases the total number of National Parks in Nigeria to 17.
“This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to global biodiversity conservation targets and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It also enhances national security efforts,” Goni said, praising the governor’s swift action in facilitating the transition.
Commissioner for Environment and Chairperson of the Steering Committee, Nafisat Buge, noted that the new status of Kampe Games Reserve presents opportunities for environmental restoration, biodiversity regeneration, and tourism development in Kwara State.
“As a state, we acknowledge the immense benefits this will bring—not only to Kwara but also to neighboring communities and states,” she remarked.
The Emir of Patigi, Ibrahim Umar (Bologi II), commended the governor for his proactive steps in ensuring the reserve’s upgrade.
“This is a significant development for our people. We pledge our full support to the Federal Government in realizing this project,” the Emir affirmed.
