Kano State Censorship Board, has stated its plans to review existing laws to ensure that films and other literary works that are produced in the state are in line with religion, culture and established law.
The Executive Secretary, Alhaji Abba Almustapha, disclosed this on Saturday during a courtesy call on the State Attorney General, saying there was urgent need for a review of the board’s 2019 amendment law.
Almustapha demanded the cooperation of the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to curb the rampant misuse of social media handles and production of anti-religious/cultural films in the State.
He explained that the misuse of social media handles was becoming rampant, hence the need for including them in the law, like WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, Tik tok, as well as Islamic singers.
The Executive Secretary further said that printers, games centers and photo laboratories should also be included in the proposed amendment.
In his reaction, the State Attorney General, Barrister Haruna Isa Dederi assured that the government would review the Kano State Censorship Board Law.
He said the society’s norms and values were being tampered with.
Dederi stated further that the major responsibility of the Kano State Censorship Board was to ensure that films and other literary works were “produced according to our religion, culture and established law.”
