Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Thursday officially handed over 76 minors arrested during the August #EndBadGovernance protests to their parents, following their release from detention.
According to The PUNCH, the handover took place at the Muhammadu Buhari Specialist Hospital, where the minors had been receiving medical care for various ailments sustained during their remand.
Representing the governor, Chief of Staff Shehu Sagagi commended President Bola Tinubu for ordering the release of the children.
He also urged the parents to support the state government’s efforts in ensuring the children receive proper education to become responsible and productive members of society.
“I want to call on parents to complement the government’s efforts towards ensuring these children are properly educated to enable them to contribute towards the development of the state and the country,” Sagagi said.
He also warned the parents to refrain from using any associations to solicit financial assistance, emphasizing that the state government would not tolerate such actions.
“The state government will not condone any attempt to solicit funds under the guise of associations,” he added.
Kano State Commissioner for Education, Haruna Doguwa, assured that the government would provide necessary support for the minors’ continued education.
“One of the protesters, who is a final-year undergraduate, will be supported to complete his studies, while another, who holds a National Certificate in Education, will be employed,” Doguwa revealed.
Additionally, he stated that 50 other minors would receive two sets of school uniforms and shoes, enabling them to resume their secondary education.
The state Commissioner for Health,Dr. Abubakar Yusuf confirmed that all the minors had undergone medical evaluations and received treatment during their time at the hospital.
“The 76 minors who were accommodated in this facility have been treated and are now ready to be reunited with their families,” he said.
Several parents expressed gratitude for the government’s support and for the children’s release. In a show of goodwill, former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Bafarawa donated N50,000 to each of the minors to support their education.
