The Kano State Government has dismissed reports that a journalist, Naziru Idris Ya’u, was injured by a stray bullet at the State House on Friday.
According to a statement by the Director General, Media and Publicity, Sanusi Tofa, the journalist sustained injuries from metal debris from an ongoing construction project at the Government House, not a stray bullet.
Tofa clarified that the area where the incident occurred had been barricaded for caution due to the ongoing construction.
Medical personnel at the Government House clinic confirmed that Naziru’s injuries were caused by metal debris, not a stray bullet.
The statement partly read, “The attention of Kano State Government has been drawn to a one-sided media report on social media revealing that a journalist, with the state Television station, attached to the Government house was hit by a stray bullet.
“The incident, which occurred amidst a flurry of misinformation, sparked widespread concern and speculation regarding the safety of journalists covering events at the government house.
“For clarity purposes, Naziru Yau, the reporter of the state television station was not hit by any stray bullet. Instead, he sustained injuries from the metal debris emanating from an ongoing construction at the Kano State Government House, an area that has been barricaded for caution.”
The government assured that the safety of journalists attached to the Government House is guaranteed, but urged them to ensure credible sources and accurate reporting to avoid spreading misinformation.
Tofa emphasized the importance of thorough investigation and verification of information to maintain public trust. He also cautioned journalists to be vigilant while carrying out their duties, especially in environments with potential hazards like construction sites.
The government pledged to review and enhance existing safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The statement concluded by urging the public to rely on verified information from credible sources and refrain from spreading unsubstantiated claims. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
