The Kano State Hisbah Board has apprehended a man and his girlfriend for allegedly conducting an unlawful marriage ceremony at Banana Restaurant on Zoo Road, Kano.
Dr. Mujahideen Abubakar, the Deputy Commander General of Operations, confirmed the arrest on Thursday, stating that Hisbah personnel acted on a tip-off and raided the venue on Wednesday night.
“It is quite unfortunate that a marriage was solemnized in a restaurant without the consent of the couple’s parents. This is a clear violation of Islamic law,” Abubakar said.
He emphasized that the board would not tolerate activities that contravene Shari’a principles in the state, warning that appropriate measures would be taken against those involved.
Hisbah operatives are also pursuing friends of the groom who reportedly organized the ceremony and fled the scene when authorities arrived.
“We have taken the couple into custody, and efforts are underway to apprehend the others who participated in this unlawful event,” Abubakar added.
The board maintains that the couple failed to meet the necessary conditions for a valid marriage under Islamic law, rendering the union illegitimate.
