A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 36-year-old driver, Mustapha Aminu, to 15 strokes of the cane for attacking a police officer on duty.
Aminu, a resident of Ungwan Sanusi in Kaduna, was found guilty of striking Sergeant Adamu Maigari on the head with a log of wood. He pleaded guilty to the charge.
According to The PUNCH, the Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel emphasized the need for the punishment to serve as a deterrent.
“This will also serve as a warning to others who may consider committing such crimes. I hereby order a court official to administer 15 strokes of the cane,” he ruled.
He further cautioned the convict to focus on his job and contribute positively to society.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, told the court that the incident occurred on January 29 at around 2 p.m. He explained that Aminu had been driving recklessly, and when stopped by the officer, he responded violently by hitting him with a log.
Leo stated that the act violated Section 237 of the Kaduna State penal Code, 2017.
