A Kyoto City University of Arts student has made headlines after dressing up as Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky for his graduation ceremony.
The student, identified only as Amiki on Twitter, wore Zelensky’s trademark green long-sleeved top and matching trousers, as well as growing a beard over three months to complete the look.
The graduation ceremony, known for its unique dress code that allows students to wear whatever they want, has seen a variety of unusual outfits over the years, including costumes inspired by Where’s Wally, Pokémon, and even Jesus Christ.
Amiki’s decision to dress as Zelensky was a gesture of solidarity with Ukraine, with the graduate carrying signs bearing messages of support and quotes from the president’s speech to the US Congress in December.
This year’s ceremony marked the first time in three years that students from the university were able to attend in person due to the pandemic.
Other standout moments from the event included a rabbit and an otter collecting their diplomas on stage, as well as a drummer who burst into a beat upon graduating, supported by other musicians in the crowd.
The story has been covered by several media outlets, including NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster. While the graduation ceremony is known for its quirky fashion choices, Amiki’s homage to the Ukrainian president has gained particular attention online, with many praising his show of support.
