Israel has announced its intention to acquire its third fleet of F-35 stealth fighter jets, solidifying its position as a leader in advanced military capabilities.
The $3 billion deal, financed through US military aid, was confirmed by the Israeli military.
Approved by Israel’s Ministry of Defence, the purchase will see an additional 25 aircraft manufactured by Lockheed Martin, bringing the total number of F-35 jets in Israel’s air force to an impressive 75.
In a statement, the Ministry of Defence said; “This new agreement will ensure the continuation of cooperation between American companies and Israeli defense industries in the production of aircraft parts.”
This collaboration not only strengthens the strategic ties between the two nations but also ensures the continuous advancement of cutting-edge military technology.
Israel holds the distinction of being the first country outside the United States to procure the F-35, establishing itself as a pioneering force in the region.
As of now, it remains the sole nation in the Middle East equipped with this highly sophisticated weapon.
While other countries in the region, such as the United Arab Emirates, have expressed interest in purchasing F-35 jets from the US, geopolitical considerations have posed challenges.
The advanced capabilities of the fighter jet, capable of intelligence gathering, deep strikes into enemy territory, and engaging in air combat, have made it a highly sought-after asset.
Known as the Joint Strike Fighter and named “Adir” or Mighty in Hebrew, the F-35 has become synonymous with Israeli military prowess.
Israel made history in May 2018 by announcing it was the first country to use the F-35 in combat.
In a separate development, Israeli fighter jets launched an attack on a Syrian air defense battery earlier on Sunday.
The preemptive strikes by Israel on Syrian airports and air bases aim to disrupt Iran’s escalating use of aerial supply lines to deliver weapons to its allies in Syria and Lebanon, including Hezbollah.
