The United States has offered a $5 million reward for information leading to the capture of the deputy commander of the Somali jihadist group Al-Shabaab, Abukar Ali Adan.
Abukar Ali Adan was officially designated as a terrorist by the United States in 2018 and is known to be associated with several branches of Al-Qaeda.
Al-Shabaab, a notorious extremist group, has been engaged in a violent insurgency against the Somali government for over 15 years. While they were flushed out of major cities in 2011-2012, they still maintain a presence in vast rural areas, particularly in the central and southern regions of the Horn of Africa nation.
Al-Shabaab continues to launch attacks against security forces, politicians, and civilians, posing a significant threat to regional stability.
The State Department emphasized that Al-Shabaab remains an ongoing threat, with intentions to plot, plan, and conspire to commit acts of terrorism against the United States, U.S. interests, and foreign partners.
The reward for information on Abukar Ali Adan’s whereabouts is part of the U.S. government’s efforts to combat this persistent threat.
