An activist attorney who also happens to be Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, has said that the claim that the Indigenous People of Biafra were ranked the 10th deadliest terrorist group in the world by the Global Terror Index is entirely false.
He stated that IPOB was only mentioned as having been declared a terrorist group in Nigeria.
In his words; “It’s FALSE that IPOB is now ranked the 10th deadliest terrorist group in the world by the Global Terror Index. IPOB was only mentioned as having been declared a terrorist group in Nigeria. IPOB is registered. Terrorist groups can’t be registered. If you try, you will be arrested.”
The Global Terror Index is an annual report published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, which provides an analysis of the impact of terrorism worldwide.
However, nowhere in the 2021 report did the IEP rank IPOB as the 10th deadliest terrorist group in the world. IPOB was not even mentioned in the report’s top 10 deadliest terrorist groups.
Furthermore, Aloy stated that IPOB is a registered organization in Nigeria, and according to Nigerian laws, only registered organizations can operate in the country.
Meanwhile, terrorist groups, by definition, are organizations that engage in acts of terrorism, which are illegal under international law.
Therefore, a terrorist group can’t be registered as a legal entity in any country.
It is worth noting that the Nigerian government designated IPOB as a terrorist group in 2017, citing its alleged involvement in violent activities and the threat it posed to national security.
However, IPOB has consistently denied any involvement in violence and maintained that its activities are peaceful.
