With the Ondo State governorship election just three weeks away, the Independent National Electoral Commission has guaranteed the safety of journalists covering the election.
INEC also cautioned the media against spreading fake news before and during the November 16 polls.
According to The PUNCH, this was disclosed at a media workshop held in Akure on Tuesday, where the National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, spoke on the importance of accurate and responsible journalism during the election.
Olumekun, who was represented by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Oluwatoyin Babalola, assured journalists that INEC had made security arrangements to protect them throughout the election process.
“We have put measures in place with security agencies to ensure that journalists are safe before, during, and after the election,” Olumekun stated.
He further emphasized the critical role journalists play in maintaining the credibility of the election process, urging them to verify information before publication to prevent the spread of fake news.
“As the election approaches, the threat of fake news is a major concern. I appeal to you to be cautious and diligent in verifying information, especially related to INEC and the electoral process,” he added.
Olumekun encouraged the media to provide balanced and objective coverage, ensuring that all political parties and candidates are fairly represented.
“Your reports must be accurate and free of bias. It is essential that you cover the election in a manner that does not escalate tensions or incite violence.”
The Administrative Secretary of INEC in Ondo State, Mr. Biodun Amosu, highlighted the importance of the workshop in equipping journalists with necessary information on the electoral guidelines and procedures.
“We are committed to conducting a free, fair, and credible election, and your cooperation is vital to achieving this,” Amosu said.
He urged journalists to avoid misinformation and ensure that their reports are based on facts to maintain public trust in the election process.
Journalists were also reminded that their presence at polling units would contribute to the transparency and integrity of the election.
