A Nigerian, and three others have been reportedly arrested by the cyber crime unit of the Gurugram police in India.
According to India’s Hindustan Times, the suspects were arrested over their involvement in dating scams in the country.
From their possession, 25 mobile phones, 65 ATM cards, 34 checkbooks, and 12 passbooks were retrieved.
He claimed the suspects used dating apps to get in touch with women and stole money from them under the premise of paying customs duties for gifts while pretending to be doctors, engineers, and IT specialists.
The accused were named as Delhi residents Aman Kumar, Rahul Singh, and Santosh Kumar as well as Chibaka aka Tall Issa of Nigeria.
According to assistant commissioner of police for cyber, Priyanshu Diwan, the suspects had been working out of Delhi for the past few months after forming a gang.
He said, “The Nigerian was the kingpin of the gang and met the other suspects in Laxmi Nagar area of Delhi. They used to scan profiles of the victims on matrimonial sites and later befriended them on social media such as Instagram and Facebook.”
