A landlord in Owerri, Imo State, has been arrested for allegedly shooting a young boy, identified as Paul, who jumped into his compound to retrieve a football.
The incident occurred on Monday at Urban Secondary School in Area N, World Bank Housing Estate, Owerri. Paul and his schoolmates were playing football when their ball bounced into the neighboring property.
In an attempt to get it back, Paul entered the compound but was shot in the waist by the homeowner.
Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, stated that the suspect was in custody and under investigation.
“The man has been arrested, and an investigation is ongoing. The victim is currently receiving treatment at the hospital,” Okoye said.
Meanwhile, Paul’s guardian, Jonathan Odikanwa, expressed deep concern for the boy’s condition.
He revealed that Paul was scheduled for surgery as doctors were puzzled over his inability to pass stool despite no bullet being found in his body.
“I don’t want to escalate the issue for now. I just want my boy to survive this critical period,” Odikanwa said. “The X-ray showed there is no bullet, but doctors are trying to find out why his bowel movements are not working. He is scheduled for surgery to examine the cause.”
Odikanwa pleaded for prayers, adding that Paul, who has lived with his family for about eight years, has been in severe pain.
“He’s been crying for water, but the doctors need to determine what is wrong before allowing him to drink. Until after the procedure and his recovery, I don’t want to say much. Just pray for him,” he said.
Paul is currently in JSS 1 at Urban Secondary School, Owerri, as efforts continue to ensure his full recovery.
