A boxer, Chukwuemeka Igboanugo, representing Imo State at the on going National Sports Festival in Asaba, Delta State is dead.
He was said to have died during a duel in the ring at the tournament on Monday.
Igboanugo died after losing a fight by knockout to Prince Gaby Amagor of Anambra in the 86kg division.
He was struck in the chin and refused to rise, prompting the referee to declare Amagor the winner.
But as the Anambra man was celebrating his victory, the crowd noticed that Igboanugo hadn’t risen from the mat, so he had to be lifted out and given medical attention before being taken to the hospital.
“It happened yesterday (Monday). I didn’t even know what was happening, we just saw that he didn’t get up.
“He was immediately taken out of the ring for medical treatment before being rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead,” a boxer from Lagos State said.
