Nigerian music star Oludipe David, popularly known as Spyro, has disclosed that his disagreement with artist manager Ubi Franklin stemmed from payment issues for a past performance.
Spyro, who revealed this during an interview with Echo Room, explained that the incident occurred at a birthday celebration for fellow artist Iyanya, where Davido had also performed.
He said his minimum charge for performances in Nigeria is ₦20 million.
“Ubi told me Davido wanted me to perform and that I would be paid $5,000,” Spyro revealed. “I pulled him aside and told him, ‘Bro, I don’t charge $5,000. The least I charge in Nigerian currency is ₦20 million.’”
Spyro went on to describe how the situation unfolded, saying that despite the payment dispute, he decided to perform at the event out of respect for the dignitaries present.
“When I got there, Davido was on stage. As soon as he came down, I was immediately called up. I couldn’t decline at that moment because there were so many dignitaries watching.”
Following the performance, Spyro said he addressed the issue with Ubi to resolve the matter of his fee. “Afterwards, I had to sort it out with Ubi regarding my pay,” he said.
The singer, best known for his hit song Who’s Your Guy, emphasized the importance of valuing his craft and setting clear standards for his performances.
