Residents of Eleso community, Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State has apprehended a man identified as Sodiq Rofiu, for allegedly smashing his mother’s head with a club in an attempt to perform a money ritual.
According to a local source, the suspect, a father of four, had previously organised a prayer with some unnamed clergy and slaughtered a ram for the prayer.
Sodiq, a commercial driver, was claimed to have summoned his mother from another community within the same LGA, Omi-Adio, to participate in the prayer.
Sodiq shut the door and attacked her with a club after enticing his wife and children out of the house, unbeknownst to the mother.
According to reports, the mother called for aid, prompting the neighbours to physically open the door to save the victim, who was bleeding heavily.
An eyewitness, who does not want to be mentioned in the print, said, “He wanted to take to his heels after discovering that residents had been alerted. But they gave him a hot chase and he was eventually apprehended and handed over to the law enforcement agents for investigation, while a small wooden box with white cloth, a sharp cutlass, as well as a club, were recovered from the place.”
It was also gathered that the suspect is in custody with indigenous security outfit, Amotekun.
It was also reported that the victim had been admitted to Emiloju Hospital, where she was receiving medical attention.
Also in an interview with journalists, the elder sister of Sodiq who was attending to the victim simply introduced herself as Elizabeth. She denied the alleged money ritual, saying the suspect had a history of mental illness.
Elizabeth said, “About ten years ago, Sodiq had a mental illness and was treated for it.”
The decision to evict the suspect from the neighbourhood was made for security grounds, according to a senior member of the Landlord Association who went by the name Yemisi.
