A group of sports journalists was abducted in the Isseke community of Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State, while traveling to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, for the upcoming African Cup of Nations qualifying match between Nigeria and Libya, scheduled for Friday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
According to The PUNCH, reports indicate that approximately 11 journalists were in a bus passing through Isseke when they were feared kidnapped on Wednesday.
Sources revealed that as of Thursday morning, nine of the journalists had been rescued; however, one individual, identified as Kola, was found deceased, and four others remain unaccounted for.
Anambra State police authorities have confirmed the incident. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the state police command, provided updates on the situation when contacted.
He stated, “Joint security forces have successfully rescued six members of the media crew who were abducted while traveling from Lagos to Uyo along the Isseke-Orlu Road in Ihiala.”
Ikenga also noted that operations are ongoing to rescue the remaining crew members. “We are still working diligently to locate the seventh crew member,” he added. “Further developments shall be communicated as the situation unfolds.”
