The American vivacious star best known for her portrayal of Nellie Forbush in the 1958 film adaptation of ‘South Pacific, Mitzi Gaynor, thas passed away at the age of 93.
Gaynor, one of the last shining figures from the golden era of Hollywood musicals, died of natural causes on Thursday morning in Los Angeles, her longtime managers Rene Reyes and Shane Rosamonda confirmed in a statement to The Associated Press.
“As we celebrate her legacy, we offer our thanks to her friends and fans and the countless audiences she entertained throughout her long life,” Reyes and Rosamonda shared. “Your love, support, and appreciation meant so very much to her and was a sustaining gift in her life.”
Spanning eight decades, Gaynor’s career stretched across the worlds of film, television, and live performance, but it was her leading role in ‘South Pacific’ that solidified her place in cinematic history.
The film earned three Academy Award nominations and took home the Oscar for best sound.
Gaynor herself was nominated for a Golden Globe for best actress in recognition of her unforgettable performance in the movie, where her charismatic rendition of songs like “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair” left an indelible mark on audiences.
Born as Francesca Marlene de Czanyi von Gerber on September 4, 1931, in Chicago, Gaynor grew up in a musically rich household and began singing and dancing from a young age.
Her vibrant personality and natural talent led her to the big screen, where she worked alongside legendary figures such as Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Gene Kelly.
Later in her career, Gaynor redefined herself as a stage entertainer. Guided by her husband and manager, Jack Bean, she launched a successful musical revue, making a name for herself on stages across Las Vegas, Florida, and prestigious venues throughout the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Australia.
Gaynor and Bean, who tied the knot in 1954, lived a more private life off the stage. In 1960, the couple purchased a grand home in Beverly Hills, where they spent much of their time hosting intimate gatherings for close friends rather than attending Hollywood’s glitzy events.
After more than five decades of marriage, Bean passed away in 2006. The couple, despite their long and enduring relationship, did not have any children.
Mitzi Gaynor’s enduring charm, vibrant energy, and timeless talent leave behind a lasting legacy that will continue to be cherished by generations of fans.
