Hezbollah has confirmed the death of its leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, following an Israeli airstrike that targeted the group’s underground headquarters in southern Beirut.
This strike, described as precise and devastating, occurred during a period of heightened tensions as Israel continues its military campaign against Hezbollah and other militant groups in the region.
Nasrallah’s death is not only a significant loss for Hezbollah but also a major setback for Iran, which relies on his leadership to bolster the Tehran-backed “Axis of Resistance.”
In a statement released on Saturday, Hezbollah vowed to continue its resistance against Israel, emphasizing its support for Gaza and Palestine, while defending Lebanon and its citizens.
The statement did not provide specific details about how Nasrallah was killed, but it confirmed his death as a key moment in the ongoing conflict.
According to the Israeli military, Nasrallah was killed in a “targeted strike” on Friday, which hit Hezbollah’s underground headquarters beneath a residential area in Dahiyeh, a Hezbollah stronghold in southern Beirut.
The attack also claimed the life of another prominent Hezbollah commander, Ali Karaki, along with several other high-ranking officials within the group.
“The strike was conducted while Hezbollah’s senior chain of command were operating from the headquarters and advancing terrorist activities against the citizens of the State of Israel,” the Israeli military said in a statement.
The airstrike, which reverberated across Beirut, caused significant destruction. A Lebanese security official reported that the attack left a massive crater, approximately 20 meters (65 feet) deep, shaking the city with a series of powerful explosions.
As a result, residents of Dahiyeh have fled the area, seeking refuge in downtown Beirut and other safer regions of the city.
Saturday saw a continuation of Israeli airstrikes, with additional attacks on Dahiyeh and other parts of Lebanon.
The skies above Beirut were illuminated by huge explosions during the night, and further bombardments followed in the morning, with smoke billowing over the skyline.
As Hezbollah reels from the loss of Nasrallah, the group’s future leadership and response to Israeli aggression remain uncertain.
Nonetheless, this dramatic escalation is likely to deepen the already complex and volatile dynamics of the Israel-Lebanon conflict, with broader implications for Iran’s regional strategy.
