A medical doctor, identified only as Wales, has issued a caution to Nigerians regarding the consumption of rotten tomatoes and pepper, commonly known as ‘eesa’ or ‘baaje’ tomatoes.
In a viral social media clip, Wales highlighted the significant health risks associated with these decayed produce, emphasizing their potential to cause cancer due to harmful microorganisms such as fungi, which produce mycotoxins.
Displaying a plate of spoiled tomatoes, the doctor underscored that economic hardships should not drive people to consume “poison.”
He said, “Fellow Nigerians, good morning. I know that, because of the economy, you are saving money on so many things. But please, if you see this thing, (rotten tomatoes and peppers) in the market, run away.”
“Just because we are in a ‘rogbodiyan’ (tough) economy does not mean you should start eating poison, because this type of tomato can cause cancer.”
Wales elaborated that while fresh tomatoes are rich in Vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants, rotten ones are sold at lower prices to those who can’t afford fresh produce.
These decayed tomatoes are highly susceptible to fly contamination, which introduces germs and eggs.
The worst aspect, he noted, is the infiltration of microorganisms like fungi that produce mycotoxins as the tomatoes decay.
These toxins, linked to cancer and immune deficiency, spread quickly through the fluid-rich tomatoes.
He further warned that no amount of washing or boiling would eliminate the mycotoxins, which also pose a threat to the liver and kidneys.
