Erling Haaland has solidified his future with Manchester City, agreeing to a groundbreaking nine-and-a-half-year contract that keeps him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2034.
This deal extends his previous contract, which was set to expire in 2027, marking one of football’s longest agreements.
By the time the contract concludes, Haaland will be 34 years old.
The Norwegian striker, who joined City from Borussia Dortmund in June 2022, has been prolific, netting 111 goals in 126 appearances.
Despite rumors of a potential move to Real Madrid, Haaland has committed to staying with the Premier League giants. His new deal reportedly surpasses his prior earnings of £400,000 per week, making him City’s highest-paid player.
Haaland’s decision comes as City, currently sixth in the Premier League, bolster their squad with defenders Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis set to join from Lens and Palmeiras, respectively.
Additionally, Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush is on the verge of completing his move to the club. Meanwhile, City faces an ongoing disciplinary case related to 115 charges from the Premier League, which the club denies.
“I am City no matter what”
Sharing his excitement over the new contract, Haaland said, “I am really happy to have signed my new contract and to be able to look forward to spending even more time at this great club.
“Manchester City is a special club, full of fantastic people with amazing supporters, and it’s the type of environment that helps bring the best out of everybody.
“I also want to thank Pep [Guardiola], his coaching staff, my team-mates, and everyone at the club as they have all helped me so much in the past couple of years. They have made this such a special place to be, and now I am City no matter what.
“I want to keep developing, keep working to get better, and look to do my best to try and help us achieve more success going forward.”
Haaland also expressed his admiration for manager Pep Guardiola, highlighting the coach’s relentless dedication.
“It’s a great thing to speak with him, and to train and to play under him every single day; to get his input on me and how to become a better footballer and to develop even more, because he is the best,” Haaland said.
“It’s so nice to work with him, not only because he’s the best, but he’s also the most hard-working person I’ve ever seen. The amount of hours he puts down is motivating and it’s also inspiring.
“It’s hard, it’s tough, because he demands a lot, but that’s what I want. I want people to demand a lot from me and to put pressure on me.”
A decorated run at City
Haaland has enjoyed remarkable success at Manchester City, lifting two Premier League titles, the Champions League, an FA Cup, and a Super Cup in just two and a half seasons.
He has also been a key figure in the current campaign, scoring 10 goals in the first five Premier League games, including consecutive hat-tricks.
However, with only six goals in the subsequent 16 league matches, Haaland now trails Mo Salah, who leads the league’s scoring chart with 18 goals.
City initially secured Haaland’s services by activating his £51 million release clause from Dortmund, a deal that eventually rose to £85.5 million when agent fees, signing bonuses, and additional costs were factored in.
Prior to joining City, Haaland had already demonstrated his scoring prowess, netting 86 goals in 89 matches for Dortmund after moving from RB Salzburg in 2020.
