Coleman Wires and Cables Limited has urged the Federal Government to replace outdated power cables that have outlived their intended shelf life.
The current state of these aging cables has led to inefficiencies, severely impacting Nigeria’s power distribution network, with the nation recently experience multiple power outages.
Managing Director of Coleman Wires and Cables, Mr. George Onafowokan, addressed the need for this change, urging Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, to prioritize the overhaul of the country’s electrical infrastructure.
Speaking about the frequent grid collapses, Onafowokan highlighted that many cables in the system are deteriorated to the point of being unfit for purpose, which only exacerbates the challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector.
Onafowokan said the grid failures not only disrupt power but also impose significant hardships on the manufacturing industry.
Businesses, he noted, are forced to turn to diesel-powered generators—a costly and unsustainable alternative—as a means to maintain operations.
“Manufacturing costs are skyrocketing due to energy costs, and this is making it difficult for businesses to remain viable. Rising diesel prices have further compounded the problem, with many businesses struggling to keep operations running,” he remarked.
