Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has expressed sympathy for the victims of a tanker explosion that occurred on Wednesday in Ibafo, causing widespread damage to properties, including vehicles and buildings.
According to The PUNCH, Abiodun described the incident as a tragic and unfortunate event, noting the significant loss of property.
However, he expressed relief that no lives were lost. “My heart goes out to those affected by the inferno. We stand by you during this difficult time,” he stated.
The fire reportedly started when a petrol-laden tanker overturned in front of a commercial bank along the Ibafo section of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
Eyewitnesses suggested the tanker driver may have fallen asleep, causing him to lose control of the vehicle, which led to the crash and subsequent explosion.
The governor also urged tanker drivers to strictly follow safety guidelines when transporting and storing fuel to prevent future accidents.
“It’s crucial that fuel transporters adhere to safety regulations to avoid the recurrence of such disasters,” Abiodun emphasized.
The Federal Road Safety Corps in Ogun State confirmed that three people were rescued and taken to the hospital for treatment.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State FRSC, Florence Okpe, shared updates on the situation, saying, “Our rescue team responded promptly, and fortunately, no lives were lost. However, vehicles parked along the road were destroyed.”
Residents affected by the explosion reported shattered windows, cracked walls, and damaged roofs in several buildings near the explosion site.
