Following a heart attack that occurred during a cabinet meeting, Gabon’s foreign minister, Michael Moussa Adamo, passed away on Friday.
The government issued a brief statement stating that Moussa Adamo, 62, a supporter of President Ali Bongo Ondimba, passed away after having a heart attack “despite efforts by specialists” to save him.
An unnamed source close to the presidential palace told AFP that he “had sat down at the start of the cabinet meeting and began to feel unwell.” The source added that he was brought to a military hospital while unconscious but passed away just after lunchtime.
Moussa Adamo was referred to as “a great diplomat, a true statesman” on Twitter in response to his passing by President Bongo.
President Bongo said; “To me, he was firstly a friend, loyal and faithful, on whom I have always been able to count on. It’s a huge loss for Gabon.”
Moussa Adamo began his career as a broadcaster on public television after being born in the northeastern town of Makokou in 1961.
He was appointed Chief of Staff for Bongo, the Defense Minister, in 2000.
Moussa Adamo also served as President Bongo’s Special Advisor following the passing of his father, Omar Bongo Ondimba, in 2009.
He served as the country of Gabon’s ambassador to the United States for ten years, from 2000 to 2020. In March 2022, he was appointed foreign minister.
