No fewer than 185,270 permanent drivers’ licences are yet to be collected in the first quarter of 2024 across the country.
According to The PUNCH, The spokesperson of Federal Road Safety Corps, Jonas Agwu, disclosed this on Saturday.
Agwu knocked motorists who processed their licences and never bother to go back and collect it, adding that the corps patrol team would apprehend such drivers for defaulting.
He stated, “The uncollected permanent drivers’ license in 2024 first quarter is 185,270. Any driver still holding the temporal drivers’ license beyond the expiry date due to his/her negligence, of failure to pick it up at the issuing centre, contravene part VII section 74 sub- section (1) and (2) of the National Road Traffic Regulations 2012 which states that “74.—(1) A person shall not drive on a public road a motor vehicle of any class or description unless he is the holder of a valid driver’s licence in respect of that class of vehicle.
“Patrol teams have been armed with these regulations. Such drivers when apprehended will be booked for Drivers License Violation. The FRSC is saddled with responsibility of producing licenses and as soon as production is made, it is dispatched to issuing states through the Board of Internal Revenue. The BIR in conjunction with the states sends contact SMS using the bulk messaging platform to license owners for pick up.
“However there are certain instances where the SMS may fail to deliver due network, FRSC compile the list of uncollected licenses and place a call to the owners registered lines to ask them to come pick up their licenses.”
