France began their Euro 2024 journey with a narrow 1-0 victory over Austria on Monday, thanks to an own goal by Maximilian Woeber.
Kylian Mbappe, who assisted the decisive goal, left the match with a bloodied nose late in the game.
Woeber inadvertently turned Mbappe’s cross into his own net just before halftime in Duesseldorf, securing the win for France, who are among the favorites for the tournament.
Austria, under the guidance of Ralf Rangnick, put up a strong fight, employing a pressing strategy that tested the 2022 World Cup runners-up. Mbappe had to exit the game near the end due to an injury from a collision.
Earlier, Mbappe missed a significant opportunity that could have widened France’s lead.
Despite not being at their peak performance, Les Bleus will be relieved with the win after a buildup dominated by political discussions rather than football.
French players, including Mbappe, faced numerous questions about the country’s upcoming elections and the potential rise of the far-right National Rally party.
A loss might have sparked concerns about the team’s focus, but this win positions Didier Deschamps’ squad level with the Netherlands, who defeated Poland 2-1 in their opener.
France and the Netherlands will clash next in Leipzig on Friday, while Austria takes on Poland the same day in Berlin.
Austria entered the tournament with a seven-game unbeaten streak and a lineup familiar with German football, including eight Bundesliga players. Their coach, Rangnick, also hails from Germany.
The French team, boasting immense talent and captained by Mbappe, had a challenging night.
Mbappe, who had a disappointing Euro campaign three years ago, struggled again, missing an early chance and later failing to score when one-on-one with Austria’s goalkeeper, Patrick Pentz.
Austria had their moment to shine in the 36th minute, but Christoph Baumgartner’s effort was saved by Mike Maignan.
Two minutes later, France capitalized with Mbappe’s setup leading to Woeber’s own goal. Mbappe missed another clear chance in the second half, maintaining the game’s tension as Austria pushed for an equalizer.
Austrian fans were frustrated by what they saw as timewasting tactics from Mbappe, who received treatment after a collision and briefly returned to the field before being substituted by Olivier Giroud.
Despite the tense moments, France held on to their lead, starting their Euro 2024 campaign on a positive note.
