A tragic road accident along the Umuahia-Enugu Expressway has claimed four lives and left several others injured after a commercial bus belonging to Ebonyi Transport Corporation crashed near Ohiya Mechanic Village.
The Abia State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident, which occurred on March 7, 2025, at approximately 2:10 p.m.
The crash involved a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number 14B41EB, carrying 18 passengers—11 men and seven women.
Speaking on the incident, Abia State FRSC Sector Commander, Ngozi Ezeoma, revealed that a female passenger lost her life at the scene, while 17 others were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, for treatment.
“Sadly, three more victims—two men and one woman—later died from their injuries, bringing the death toll to four,” Ezeoma stated.
According to preliminary investigations, excessive speeding and a tire burst were likely responsible for the crash, causing the vehicle to somersault multiple times.
“Further investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident,” Ezeoma added.
Eyewitnesses, however, provided mixed reports on the incident. While some suggested that the driver may have fallen asleep due to exhaustion, others speculated that brake failure could have played a role.
Ezeoma extended condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists to adhere to road safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies.
“The FRSC remains committed to reducing road crashes, and we strongly advise drivers to obey traffic rules, maintain their vehicles properly, and avoid reckless driving,” she emphasized.
