At least four people have reportedly lost their lives following a violent clash between suspected rival cult groups in Owo, the headquarters of Owo Local Government Area in Ondo State.
According to The PUNCH, among the victims were an unidentified woman and her infant, who were said to have been struck by stray bullets during the chaos on Monday.
Two other individuals were reportedly shot as gunfire echoed through parts of the town for several hours.
An eyewitness described the tense atmosphere, noting how the absence of students may have prevented further casualties.
“Weβve been hearing gunshots since morning. Itβs a relief that schools are not in session, or the situation could have been worse,” the witness said.
The bodies of the deceased have been moved to the morgue at the Federal Medical Centre in Owo.
Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the fatalities and assured the public that the situation is under control. “Four deaths have been confirmed, but calm has been restored thanks to the prompt intervention of our officers,” Odunlami stated.
She added that efforts are ongoing to track down those responsible for the violence. “Our men are working tirelessly to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure justice is served,” she said.
