A forex trader, Solomon Idonije, charged with N20m foreign exchange fraud, has been ordered by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Ikeja Special Offences Court in Lagos to be remanded in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The EFCC alleged that Idonije, on December 21, 2020, obtained the sum of N4.8m from one Iyen Omowuiugbe for forex trading.
The anti-graft agency also alleged that Idonije on December 23, 2020, obtained another N4.1m from the complainant.
Idonije was charged with obtaining money under false pretences, an offence which contravenes sections 1(1) and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.
A lawyer, Ebuka Okongwu, who held brief for the prosecution counsel, Gabriel Akaogu, prayed the court for a trial date for the prosecution to present its witnesses and evidence to prove the case against the defendant.
However, the defence counsel, Jonathan Okagbero, informed the court of an application for the bail of the defendant.
Justice Taiwo remanded the defendant in the custody of the EFCC and adjourned the case until July 13, 2022, for hearing of his bail application.
