The Flying Eagles of Nigeria won their first game of the ongoing under 20 world cup in Argentina.
The two-time finalists at this tournament who were favorite to win the match came back from a goal down to secure the win over the Dominican Republic at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza.
The Dominican Republic grabbed the lead against the run of play in the 23rd minute when captain Edison Azcona converted a penalty kick after VAR revealed that Benjamin Frederick had fouled inside his own penalty area.
Guillermo De Pena, a defender for the Dominican Republic, scored an own goal off a long throw-in by Nigeria’s Flying Eagles on the hour mark.
To give the eagles the lead, Midfielder Samson Lawal capitalised on a defensive error inside the area to bring the scoreline to 2:1 at the 70-minute mark.
On Wednesday, the Flying Eagles take on Italy in their next Group D match in Mendoza.
