The Federation of International Football Association has lauded Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, for their commendable performance at the ongoing U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic.
The team, led by head coach Bankole Olowookere, saw their journey in the tournament come to an end with a 2-0 defeat to the United States on Saturday night.
Despite their strong form in the group stage, where they showcased a solid, cohesive play style, the Nigerian girls struggled to break down the American defense in the knockout phase.
The match saw the United States take control as Kennedy Fuller converted a penalty late in the first half, putting Nigeria at a disadvantage.
Kimmi Ascanio then doubled the lead in the second half, sealing Nigeria’s exit from the tournament.
The Flamingos, who claimed the bronze medal in the previous edition held in India, fell short of replicating their past success.
Yet, FIFA took to social media to recognize the team’s hard work, alongside three other nations that were also eliminated, posting, “Made their nations proud at the #U17WWC.”
This acknowledgment from FIFA serves as a testament to the team’s resilience and the dedication they displayed throughout the tournament, representing Nigeria with pride on the world stage.
