The Federal Government pledged on Friday to increase the ability of non-governmental organizations to create a robust system for assisting less fortunate Nigerians.
At a one-day training in Abuja for NGOs and its Social Development employees, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Dr. Sani Gwarzo, made this statement.
Gwarzo, who was represented by Mr. Ahmed Mahmoud, emphasized that NGOs were essential in assisting government efforts to provide the required support to society’s members.
“With their work and collaboration with various levels of government, NGOs can promote development by using the advocacy and training they get their popularity out of the numerous benefits they provide.
“They promote religious tolerance and concord, inform the public about governmental policies, keep tabs on those policies, and inspire people through advocacy to take part in activities that have a significant positive impact on society,” the speaker stated.
He consequently asked them to create effective policies that were performance-based and to put institutional monitoring programs in place to achieve improved results.
“We should all cooperate and ensure a win-win strategy. Training programs like these are required to keep us informed about the Ministry’s duty to improve the condition of the most vulnerable members of our society.
“The need for cooperation as a means of bridging the gaps that organizations feel when they stand apart is demonstrated by the opportunity to explore methods for addressing their difficulties,” he added.
According to the permanent secretary, the ministry has cooperation with the international non-governmental organization, Save the Children Foundation, to supervise the federal government’s Social Investment Programme in states as a third party.
The director of social development for the ministry, Mr. Taiwo Bashorun, also said that the workshop was required to improve the participants’ potential for maximum output.
Thus, Bashorun urged the participants to take advantage of the chance and engage in idea sharing to attain the program’s objectives.
