The Federal Government has announced plans to streamline Nigeria’s immigration process by introducing e-gate technology at border entry points.
This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to modernize border management and enhance national security.
According to The PUNCH, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made this known on Monday through a statement shared on his official Facebook page.
During a presentation on a newly designed integrated border management system for the Nigeria Immigration Service, the minister outlined how the e-gate technology would facilitate more efficient and secure travel.
“The e-gate facility automates vetting processes and significantly reduces wait times for passengers at immigration checkpoints,” Tunji-Ojo said, highlighting the core function of the system.
He further explained that the initiative is designed to foster smoother and more legitimate travel in and out of Nigeria while ensuring the country remains secure.
“By adopting advanced technology, our aim is to create a secure, efficient, and traveller-friendly environment that will support Nigeria’s economic and social development,” he added.
Tunji-Ojo also emphasized the government’s commitment to building a modern and effective immigration service, stating, “We envision an immigration system confidently manned by well-trained and motivated personnel.”
The minister assured Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains focused on addressing emerging challenges in border management to safeguard national security.
