The Federal Government has given the green light for the establishment of a modular refinery within the Abia Industrial and Innovative Park, situated in Owaza, Ukwa West Local Government Area, a major oil-producing region in Abia State.
Governor Alex Otti made this announcement during the official commencement of the 11.1-kilometre Obehie-Umudobia-Owaza road construction, emphasizing that the initiative is more than just an infrastructure project, it is a catalyst for economic revival.
“The reconstruction of this road is about more than just infrastructure; it is about reviving dormant economic assets and reigniting the aspirations that once defined this region,” Otti stated at the event.
He assured residents that the project would be delivered within a year, noting that its completion would boost the economic potential of AIIP and enhance the overall development of the area.
Modular Refinery Gets Federal Approval
Otti revealed that the Federal Government had recently granted approval for a modular refinery to be built within AIIP by H.I.S. Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited.
“I am pleased to inform you that just a few days ago, we received approval for a modular refinery to be built inside AIIP by H.I.S. Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited,” he announced.
He reassured the people of Ukwa that the Abia State Government would provide full support for the project, emphasizing its potential to drive industrialization and economic growth in the region.
End of Neglect for Ukwa Land
The governor declared that Ukwa, the only oil-producing region in Abia, would no longer suffer neglect.
“Today, we officially declare that the era of neglect for Ukwa and its communities is over. Your land will yield its best, and the oil in your land will bring prosperity,” he affirmed.
He further pledged to collaborate with agencies such as ASOPADEC and NDDC to address long-standing issues of political exclusion and underdevelopment.
More Infrastructure Projects Approved
Responding to community demands, Otti announced that the Umuzike-Obokwe-Ngwaiyiekwe road has been included in the 2025 budget and will soon be inaugurated.
