The Federal Capital Territory Administration has issued a warning to residents of the region about actions that could harm the environment.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, Umar Shuaibu, made the suggestion during the 2023 World Earth Day celebration, which was held on Thursday in Abuja and had as its subject, “Invest in our planet.”
Shuaibu criticized the country’s capital’s residents for their constant alterations to and destruction of the Abuja Master Plan, claiming that the plan for the development of Abuja had been altered and damaged by illegal tree cutting, building on water channels, and traffic corridors.
The goal of the World Earth Day celebration in the FCT, according to Senior Special Assistant on Environment and Garbage Management to the Minister of FCT, Mr. Tunde Imolehin, was to instruct locals on how to properly dispose of their garbage.
“We must make sensible investments if we want to give our time on this world purpose. We have a responsibility to protect the environment and finite resources.
“The world Earth started in 1970 in the United States to emphasize the significance of our planet and the preservation of its ecosystems on all continents and oceans. Since then, the issues that face humanity and the environment, as well as solutions to them, have captured the attention of the entire globe.”
The director of the FCT Department of Development Control said in his presentation that over 10,000 unlawful structures have been destroyed in the FCT over the previous eight years.
He added that as part of the administration’s effort to return normality to the territory, 300 hectares of land had been regained.
Galadima claimed that the action was necessary to counter the norms preventing the city’s leaders from reestablishing the master plan and sanity.
Also, he demanded that the city’s growth plan be reviewed, and he suggested hiring a consultant to oversee the improvements.
The Federal Road Safety Corps and the Directorate of Road Traffic Services, often known as VIO, were not left out as important stakeholders by the Senior Special Assistant to the Minister of FCT on Monitoring, Inspection, and Enforcement, Mr. Ikharo Attah.
“The ozone layer is being destroyed by numerous shaky cars and motorcycles that generate smoke. We all need to take part in planting trees, and we shouldn’t let anything stop us from safeguarding the plants,” he said.
In order to prevent our children from having to pay for the damage we are causing to the environment, Attah remarked, “The planet is getting very hot. We must start to change the narrative.”
He also urged locals to refrain from destroying the green areas in order to create more concrete jungles.
