Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest forward,Taiwo Awoniyi, experienced a rollercoaster night during their FA Cup fourth-round battle against Exeter City, scoring a crucial goal but later being stretchered off in stoppage time following a serious injury.
The Premier League side advanced to the fifth round via a tense penalty shootout, but Awoniyi’s injury cast a shadow over the celebrations on Tuesday night.
The Nigerian striker gave Forest the lead in the 37th minute, but disaster struck late in stoppage time when he collided with Exeter goalkeeper Joe Whitworth while contesting a high ball.

As Whitworth attempted to punch the ball clear, his fist inadvertently connected with Awoniyi’s face, leaving the forward bloodied and requiring immediate medical attention.
Medics from both teams rushed onto the pitch and spent ten minutes attending to the visibly dazed striker before he was taken off on a stretcher to applause from the St James’ Park crowd.
Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo later provided an update, confirming that Awoniyi had likely suffered a broken nose but was in good spirits.
“I think he broke his nose, but he’s walking around smiling. He did an amazing job, he did really well today,” a statement on the club’s website read.
In a reassuring follow-up, BBC Sport reported that Awoniyi was seen walking unaided back to Forest’s dressing room after leaving the medical center.
Forest survive Exeter’s challenge
Despite Awoniyi’s injury, Nottingham Forest fought hard to overcome their determined League One opponents. Exeter stunned the visitors early on, taking a fifth-minute lead through Josh Magennis.
Forest hit back quickly, with Ramon Sosa equalizing in the 10th minute. Awoniyi then put Forest ahead before halftime, but Magennis struck again in the 50th minute, leveling the match and thrilling the home crowd.
Exeter’s hopes took a major hit when Ed Turns was sent off in the 87th minute for a reckless challenge on Morgan Gibbs-White.
Even with ten men, the hosts held firm, resisting relentless Forest pressure as the visitors tallied 31 shots. Jota Silva nearly won it for Forest in extra time but hit the crossbar, forcing penalties.

Exeter’s hopes faded as substitute goalkeeper Matz Sels saved Reece Cole’s attempt, and Angus MacDonald’s shot struck the crossbar, handing Forest a 4-2 shootout victory.
