Farouk Lawan, a former Nigerian lawmaker, has been released from prison after completing his five-year sentence.
Lawan was convicted of soliciting and receiving a $500,000 bribe while serving as chairman of a parliamentary committee probing the 2012 fuel subsidy fraud.
According to The PUNCH, In January 2024, the Supreme Court upheld his conviction, affirming his guilt in the case.
Lawan had been accused of requesting a $3 million bribe from billionaire businessman Femi Otedola to remove his company, Zenon Oil, from the list of firms implicated in the fuel subsidy scandal.
Lawan’s case drew widespread attention due to the high-profile nature of the allegations and his role in leading the investigation into one of Nigeria’s most significant corruption scandals. His conviction marked a notable chapter in the country’s anti-corruption efforts.
