The former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Lamorde, has passed away at the age of 61.
A close associate disclosed this on Sunday morning that Mr. Lamorde died in Egypt, where he had gone for medical treatment.
Born on December 20, 1962, Lamorde’s career in law enforcement began in 1986 when he joined the Nigerian Police Force, eventually retiring as a Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2021. His tenure as EFCC chairman spanned from 2011 to 2015.
Lamorde’s tenure as EFCC chairman began on November 3, 2011, when President Goodluck Jonathan removed his predecessor, Farida Waziri.
He was initially appointed in an acting capacity and later confirmed as the third substantive Chairman of the Commission by the Senate on February 15, 2012.
According to his profile on the EFCC website, Lamorde, who was born in Mubi, Adamawa State, graduated from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology.
His involvement with the EFCC started in 2003 as the pioneer Director of Operations. In December 2007, he briefly served as Acting Chairman before Farida Waziri’s appointment in June 2008.
Lamorde returned to the EFCC in December 2010 as Director of Operations, succeeding Stephen Otitoju.
Following Mrs. Waziri’s removal on November 23, 2011, Lamorde, then an Assistant Commissioner of Police, was appointed Acting Chairman once more.
He was confirmed as the substantive Chairman on February 15, 2012, holding the position until President Buhari replaced him with Ibrahim Magu on November 9, 2015.
