A former vice chancellor of Bayero University Kano, Professor Ibrahim Umar, has passed away.
The Punch reported that on Monday, Farouk Ibrahim Umar, his son, told reporters that his father had passed on.
He stated that on Tuesday at 10am, the famous physicist’s funeral ceremonies would be held in Kofar Kudu (today).
The late vice chancellor of BUK, who led the organization from 1979 until 1986, was its third leader.
In 1976, he was the first academician from Nigeria to teach physics at the college.
He was named Director-General of the Nigerian Energy Commission in 1989 and participated in the Nigerian delegation to the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
In 2000 and 2001, the late Prof. Umar served as the IAEA’s Board of Governors’ Chairman. In 2004, he was appointed Director of the Centre for Energy Research and Training, which houses the nation’s first research nuclear reactor.
In 2007, during the international workshop on renewable energy for sustainable development in Africa held at the University of Nigeria in Nsukka, Nigeria, he served as a member of the international advisory council.
