Jamal Musiala’s second goal of the tournament helped Germany secure a 2-0 victory over Hungary on Wednesday, ensuring their place in the European Championship knockout stage.
The win in Group A made Germany the first team to advance to the next round at Euro 2024.
Musiala opened the scoring in the 22nd minute following a defensive error by Hungary, with Germany captain İlkay Gündoğan providing the assist.
Despite protests from the Hungarian side, the goal stood.
Gündoğan then added a second in the 67th minute after a well-executed build-up, sealing the win for the hosts.
Germany’s two wins from two matches guarantee their spot at least among the four best third-placed teams.
They will secure a top-two finish in the group if Scotland does not defeat Switzerland later on Wednesday, a result that would also prevent Hungary from finishing in the top two.
Musiala’s opener came after a defensive lapse by Hungary, allowing him to score with a deflected shot.
Hungary had a goal disallowed in first-half stoppage time and missed several other opportunities before Gündoğan’s strike confirmed the three points for Germany.
Previously, Musiala had scored in Germany’s 5-1 victory over Scotland in their opening match.
Hungary, having lost 3-1 to Switzerland, now faces a difficult task to advance in the tournament.
