Wolverhampton Wanderers secured a crucial 2-1 victory over last-placed Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday, edging closer to Premier League safety with a brace from Jørgen Strand Larsen.
Despite Southampton’s promising start, Wolves struck first against the run of play in the 19th minute. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde delivered a well-placed cross into the penalty area, where Strand Larsen expertly glanced a header past Saints goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
The duo linked up once more just after halftime, capitalizing on a midfield turnover. Bellegarde played in Strand Larsen, who fired a precise shot into the bottom left corner, doubling the visitors’ lead in the 47th minute.
Southampton pulled one back in the 75th minute when Paul Onuachu reacted quickest to a rebound off the post, smashing the ball home to give the hosts hope.
However, Wolves withstood late pressure to claim all three points, moving nine points ahead of 18th-placed Ipswich Town, while Southampton remain rooted to the bottom with just nine points.
